Mt. Hope Park
In January 2015, the Aquidneck Land Trust (ALT) and the Town of Portsmouth partnered to purchase a unique waterfront property in Portsmouth, RI for the development of Mt. Hope Park, a new permanently conserved park land. Under the arrangement, the Town of Portsmouth holds ownership and ALT holds the conservation easement, which permanently protects the property as open space and parklands. The parcel is located at the intersection of Bayview Avenue and Bristol Ferry Road, and juts out into Mount Hope Bay with scenic views of the bridge and surrounding water.
The property is not yet open to the public – it still needs to be restored and improved. The van Beuren Charitable Foundation has given ALT funding for a master planning process to ensure quality design and planning for the park. This community driven process formally kicked off at the end of 2015.
The first public meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1 at Portsmouth Town Council chamber (Portsmouth Town Hall, 2200 East Main Rd). A drop-in session will occur from 6-7pm followed by a formal presentation and discussion from 7-9pm.
