Background Conserved Acre Mapping
What's at Stake - This Land Is Our Land
The state of Rhode Island is the second most densely populated state in the nation, and development here is increasing nine times faster than the population.

Aquidneck Island consists of 24,484 acres. Everyday, open space on our Island is lost. This is not surprising considering the Island's proximity to Providence, Boston, and New York City.

Time is running out to save the important open space acres that define our quality of life today and tomorrow. Once land is developed, the opportunity to conserve it is very possibly gone forever. The drinking water resources, landscapes, farms, forests, fields and wetlands that we save in the next few years will define Aquidneck Island's natural heritage - for all time.

In 1990, the Aquidneck Land Trust was established as a public trust "to preserve the Island's open spaces and natural character for the lasting benefit of our community."
