The Gewirz Trail at Spruce Acres
Gewirz Trail at Spruce Acres
Welcome to the Gewirz Trail at Spruce Acres Farm! This 1.5-mile trail offers colorful signage with information about the property’s history, local wildlife, and plant species. It is free and open from dawn until dusk each day. There is also ample parking, a covered picnic pavilion, a compost toilet, an ADA-friendly pathway, a pollinator garden, and community garden.
Spruce Acres is a 22.67-acre former tree farm that was purchased and conserved by Aquidneck Land Trust in 2017, thanks to the generous support of our community. Over 600 individuals, foundations, and businesses donated to help protect the property. The Town of Portsmouth, Town of Middletown, Agricultural Lands Preservation Commission, and van Beuren Charitable Foundation all provided funding as well. This land would have been developed into 20 house lots had it not been conserved. It is rich in wildlife habitat and is located within the watershed for Sisson Pond, an important source of water for the Island. It is located at 1286 East Main Road, Middletown. The parking lot entrance is directly across from Mitchell’s Lane.
Please review the Rules & Regulations for Spruce Acres. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and picked up after. You can support the Land Trust’s land conservation mission by becoming a member or donating to our annual fund. We hope that you enjoy your visit!
Community Garden Application
There are 12 garden beds at Spruce Acres (1286 East Main Rd, Middletown). Spruce Acres is a public access site but the garden is signed and fenced. Water is accessible, the beds are located adjacent to parking on site, and there is deer fencing. All gardeners must tend to their gardens and agree to comply with the garden rules. Once the application form is filled out, a staff person will follow up with details and availability. If all garden beds are claimed for the season, you will be added to a waitlist.
