New Rain Gardens
Two new rain gardens at Marble House and Spruce Acres show what property owners can do to capture and treat stormwater on their own land at different scales. Rain gardens can be beautiful, create habitat for pollinators and wildlife, help improve water quality, and mitigate flooding!
In partnership with the Land Trust, The Preservation Society of Newport County constructed a large rain garden adjacent to the Marble House parking lot. This large scale garden has hundreds of native plants and captures water coming off the lot in an underground crushed stone reservoir. The garden alleviates flooding while providing habitat and a beautiful garden feature.
At Spruce Acres, Land Trust staff and volunteers created a new Do-It-Yourself rain garden to capture stormwater off of a building at the property. The garden, located next to our 15-bed community garden, was completed in only two days and features a mix of upland and wetland native pollinator friendly plants.
