Continuing to work on preserving farmland through placing conservation easements or purchasing farmland on Aquidneck Island
With our plan in hand, we hope to work on solutions to preserve farming on Aquidneck Island. We plan to do this by:
Connecting landowners and prospective farmers in the hopes to make land more accessible, including maintaining a land-link database for Aquidneck Island
Supporting senior and retiring farmers as well as beginning farmers
Offering succession planning and business planning resources and workshops with partners, and making connections between farmers and local experts on these topics
Advocating for farm-friendly policy at the local and state level
Promoting farm practices that allow for multiple conservation benefits like wildlife habitat and protection of water resources
Developing a comprehensive plan for renewable energy in a manner that doesn’t jeopardize the local food system or farm and open space conservation
What can you do to support local agriculture?
Shop local, whether it be your local farm-stand, CSA, or farmers market
Visit and support local publicly-accessible farms with your family
Support and advocate for farm-friendly initiatives at the local and state level
Support funding like state and municipal bonds for farm conservation
If you are a landowner with unused land, consider leasing a portion to a farmer looking for land
