  • Our Work ALT outreach

Outreach & Education

ALT engages with the Island community in a variety of ways, seeking to educate people of all ages about the work that we do to conserve open space and protect our watershed areas.

  • Local Schools

ALT visits Environmental Science classes at local schools each year to educate students about the importance of reducing pollutants in the Island’s compromised watershed areas.

  • Nature Walks

ALT runs nature walks on its trails and nature preserves for local schools and summer camps.

  • Rain Barrel Fest

ALT has received grants to distribute rain barrels on the island to help homeowners practice good stewardship of their own properties through water conservation and reduction of stormwater run-off. See photos from our recent 2018 Rain Barrel Fest at Easton’s Pond, where 140 free rain barrels were eagerly received by local residents! View a short video of the event on YouTube.

  • Sixteen on Center

An annual contest, the Sixteen on Center Art & Writing Contest, is open to all Aquidneck Island students grades K-12. Hundreds of artistic representations of local vistas are submitted, including various forms of art media and written poetry and prose.

Our Work ALT outreach
  • newportFILM

ALT has sponsored, moderated, and provided speakers for numerous newportFILM screenings, including, “Forgotten Farms,” “One Big Home,” and “Unbranded.”

  • Aquidneck Grower’s Market

ALT hosts an information table at the Aquidneck Grower’s Market on select Saturdays during the summer. We provide information about our mission and accomplishments, answer questions about our current campaigns, solicit volunteers, and encourage membership and other involvement.

  • Trolley Tours

Summertime Trolley Tours of ALT-conserved lands are offered to members and non-members alike, showcasing important and recent acquisitions and successes to an enthusiastic audience. Tours stop at Sweet Berry Farm, an ALT-conserved property, for a reception featuring local wine, cheese, and produce.

  • Walks

ALT runs free Walk & Talks on its trails and properties to teach about conservation and stewardship of the land. Past examples include bird banding, herb walks, green infrastructure tours, and constellation night-time walks. We also hold occasional park clean-ups throughout the year.

Our Work ALT outreach
  • Miantonomi

ALT partners with the City of Newport to open Miantonomi Tower for free on certain days throughout the summer. In 2018, the Tower will be open on Sundays from June 17 through Labor Day, from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

  • Volvo Race

ALT often participates in community events; we’ve hosted a space in the Volvo Stopover Race Exploration Hut to teach visitors about watershed science and visited local schools to share in their Earth Day celebrations.

That’s just some of our outreach work — check out our upcoming events and news feed for more! Interested in partnering on an event? Contact Alex Chuman at 401-849-2799, ext. 14, or achuman@ailt.org for more information.
