Trail Information

The Land Trust manages 14 miles of trails to explore including the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, Spruce Acres Farm, Little Creek Preserve, Oakland Forest and Meadow, and Town Pond. Our trails are used for hiking, running, dog-walking, wildlife viewing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, and outdoor education.

Know before you go: All trails have ample parking and are free to the public. Trails are open from dawn to dusk. Dogs are welcome on all trails except the Oakland Forest Trail. Please leash dogs and pick up after them. Many of our trails run through private property. Please respect our neighbors and stay on the trail! Bicycles and motorized vehicles like ATVs or dirt bikes are not permitted. While our trails are open all four seasons, conditions may be quite wet and muddy during mud season in mild winters and spring. Horseback riding is welcome on sections of the Sakonnet Greenway Trail.

If you see any problems or are interested in volunteering to help maintain our trails, please contact Sean Grandy at sgrandy@ailt.org or fill out our volunteer form.

Sakonnet Greenway Trail

The Sakonnet Greenway Trail, at 11 miles long, is Aquidneck Island’s longest nature trail. The trail runs along historic Glen Farm Stables, through forests and farmland, across bridges and boardwalks, and alongside Newport National Golf Club. Much of the trail is equestrian friendly and parking is available at multiple locations.

Little Creek Preserve

Little Creek Preserve features a half-mile loop connected to the Sakonnet Greenway Trail, a viewing platform over a marsh, and parking on Bramans Lane. The site is excellent for wildlife viewing.

Spruce Acres Farm

Once a working Christmas tree farm, Spruce Acres features the 1.5-mile Gewirz Trail, a picnic pavilion, trailhead restroom, and interpretative signage. Due to its flat nature, open areas, and easy 1-mile loop, this site is a frequent favorite for families with smaller children.

Oakland Forest and Meadow Trail

The Oakland Forest Trail includes a 0.6-mile loop trail that runs through a meadow and an old-growth American Beech Forest. Dogs are not permitted at this site. Please note current trail closures.

Town Pond

This RI Department of Environmental Management property is conserved by a Land Trust conservation easement. We maintain a half-mile trail that runs along the restored estuary. This site has great coastal birding and osprey nests on its platforms every year.
